Home Improvement: Choosing
Flooring
Flooring is a project for home
improvement that is dreaded by most. Replacing a floor is a
high-cost investment. It also requires a major investment of
time, energy and labor. Having such a multitude of flooring
choices means much of the time it’s difficult to determine what
will be best. But, rather than dither around and put off making
a decision, look at some of the samples in the showroom, ask
lots of questions, and consider the information available
through books and the internet.
One of the major factors to consider is the type of family
you have and the type of lifestyle you prefer. For example,
light colored expensive carpet or ceramic or stone is almost
never a good idea with small children in the household. Stains
happen too commonly with children around, and every speck of
dirt is a beacon of potential stains. A better choice within
this type of household is a darker color carpet made of a stain
and water resistant or repellant fiber. If it’s an adults only
household and you are fastidious about cleanliness you may
prefer lighter hues and surfaces which take additional care
such as hard-wood flooring.
Another factor to consider when choosing flooring types is
the floor plan. It makes excellent decorating sense when in an
open floor-plan house that all the floor surfaces should be the
same throughout the house. Spaces flow smoothly into the next.
The open floor plan, on the other hand presents a challenge
when you want to separate space and provide definition between
rooms or areas. Decide what you are attempting to convey in
your flooring choice and finalize your decision based on the
theme you choose.
Where an open floor plan is not an issue, individual rooms
can and do contain different flooring types.
Cleaning and maintenance is another factor which should be
considered when choosing flooring. Easy care surfaces are
popular in areas where there is higth traffic or risk of
spills, dirt and debris, such as kitchens, bathrooms and
entryways. You certainly would not want to use high-care
surfaces such as hardwood in an area that’s a traffic pattern
in the house.
Just as is the case with other home improvement projects,
your available budget will have significant impact on which
flooring you choose. No matter how tempting the softest
broadloom, you can check discount outlets, and department
storms and perhaps find a good quality carpet in similar color
and patters for much less financial outlay. Make your self take
time to shop until y6ou find exactly the right piece of
carpet
Because the floor is the most commonly abused part of any
home, almost every home owner has had the experience of
tackling flooring replacement at least once in your lifetime.
Just remember to choose floor coverings in styles, colors and
makes that will suit your family and lifestyle.
