Good enough August 24, 2010 B. Faktorovich I knew that I am not buying air conditioner with all bells and whistles from top of the line manufacturer. And it met my average expectations.
Pros.
It works well. It worked for three months almost without breaks.
Not much noise on low fan setting.
Cons.
It choked for few hours during 105 degree three-day heat wave. Had to turn it off for few hours.
You have to turn it early in the morning when temperature is relatively low and it will keep comfortable cool temperature during the day. But if you turn it on when temperature is 90-100 degrees do no expect to cool it to 75 within an 2-3 hour. Will not work. It is not good for rapid cooling at all.
Scratch & Dent July 29, 2010 Chiara This is the second Haier window a/c that I've bought. This first is still working well, as is this new one. My only complaint is that this one arrived with a big dent. Since the price was low and it works perfectly I've kept it and I'm happy with the performance.
Great little AC July 16, 2010 Clifford Collins (Houston, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Set up for this little unit is pretty simple. The plastic extenders for larger windows seem a bit cheap and in my mind wouldn't insulate well at all. Once installed I was impressed by the cooling potential and the fan speed. The unit blows cold air as well as air conditioners much larger in size.
I use the Haier HWR10X6 in the master bedroom for energy savings. Turning off the central unit of the house and cranking this little guy up at night. By the middle of the night we are usually grabbing for the comforter and that is a wonderful feeling for the middle of summer in southeast Texas! Our room is roughly 400 sq. feet with 15 foot ceilings.
The unit is also small enough to be hidden easily from the neighborhood association spies by planting a couple of bushes in front of it. Will make a nice emergency air conditioner during long power outages with the hurricane season thanks to running off regular 110V circuit.
The noise level is a little more than I expected but if you are used to sleeping in hotels while traveling, then you get the idea on how much noise this unit makes. It will certainly drown out the TV if you are watching in bed.
Overall, I recommend this air conditioner for the price, the ease for set up, the cooling area it handles and overall style.
Expensive, Loud and Poorly Designed July 12, 2010 Greg Brady (Hell, Earth) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have a 6000 BTU air conditioner (another make and model) up towards the sunny side of our house and it cools the front half to the point where the first room feels like a meat locker. I have this one out back in a spacious living room/kitchen area and aside from the first 3 feet in front of this air conditioner, it makes absolutely no difference in the ambient temperature whatsoever.
The blower they used with this model is too small to handle 10000 BTU so insufficient air moves through the coolant grill. That causes an immediate build up of frost and ice which, in my unit, becomes a large, solid block of ice within an hour or two. The thermostat is attached TO THE GRILL so it reads temperatures WAY below the actual room temperature and with the ice buildup, results in shutdown (which is a good safety factor I guess) after the ice builds up and before any actual house cooling takes place.
When the ice melts though, it has NO place to go as there is no drain spout installed in this unit so if the fan stays on, water comes flying out of the front and all over my rug. As the unit is designed, the water is supposed to miraculously pour over the side of the large lipped tray with the unit installed using a steep tilt towards the back. You'd need a 20 degree tilt to achieve any useful drainage and that makes the unit essentially useless out of the box. I found an area on the back right of the unit where a hole could be safely drilled in the bottom to provide drainage. Water POURED out afterwards (pints, no joke). I drained it, blew it out with an air compressor to get rid of all the remaining moisture, ran a dehumidifier upstairs for 2 days and 45 minutes after I turned this unit back on, block of ice (though somewhat limited towards the bottom this time...the top 1/10 of the unit seemed to finally stay ice free).
This is NOT a 10000 BTU air conditioner or at least it can't work like one. It's good for a small, single room with a closed door because there's a very small air volume there and the room will cool so fast it will shut off and prevent large ice buildup. I still strongly recommend you drill a drainage hole in a safe area of the unit so you give the water a place to go and prevent mold buildup. If you have mold problems in your house, do NOT buy this. Even with a drainage hole, far to much water collects and stays inside this unit and you'll end up with a sick house.
I really regret buying this. It's very expensive, it's fatally designed, it's VERY LOUD, can only cool a tiny, enclosed space and is all around a lousy air conditioner.
It cools down nicely, but it is loud July 9, 2010 Josh It does cool down my huge room nicely, but it is much louder than I expected.
